Kybella's active ingredient is deoxycholic acid — a naturally occurring molecule produced by the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected directly into targeted fat deposits, deoxycholic acid disrupts the fat cell membrane, causing the cell to break down and be naturally metabolized and eliminated by the body over the following weeks.

The fat cells treated with Kybella are disrupted and eliminated through the body's natural processes — and once the desired contour is achieved, further treatment is typically not needed unless significant weight gain occurs. This makes Kybella a particularly compelling option for stubborn, diet-resistant fat deposits that don't respond to exercise or weight loss.
